Close the Gap

When the high bid lands below reserve, the deal does not end. It gets a second act.

At most auctions, a car that closes under its reserve is finished unless someone picks up a phone. On VINbattle, the moment a car closes below reserve, a private negotiation opens automatically between the seller and the dealer who bid the most. No auction rep in the middle. No waiting on a callback. A clock, a short list of moves, and a decision.

How it works

  1. The auction closes below reserve. The listing moves to In negotiation and the top-bidding dealer’s window opens the instant that car’s auction ends.

  2. The dealer moves first: stand on the high bid as a final offer, or raise it.

  3. The seller answers: accept, counter with a number, or pass.

  4. It goes back and forth on the clock. Every offer or counter restarts a 24-hour response window. All open negotiations close Saturday at 5:00 PM ET.

  5. A deal is done the moment either side accepts. The sale completes exactly like a hammer sale: the same flat fees, then contact details are exchanged.

  6. No deal, no penalty. The seller can relist for the next Monday lineup as a Second Chance car, and the dealer can bid again.

The one rule that makes it work

The reserve stays private. The dealer is told one thing: the high bid came in below reserve. Never the reserve, never the size of the gap. The only seller number a dealer ever sees is a counter the seller chooses to send. That keeps every offer a real one.

For dealers

At most auctions, a car that closes under its reserve is a dead end unless somebody picks up the phone. On VINbattle it isn’t.

Close the Gap is the private negotiation that opens when you are the top bidder on a car that closes below reserve. The moment the auction ends, you get an email and the car appears under Open negotiations on your dashboard. You have 24 hours to stand on your bid as your final offer, or raise it. The seller can accept, counter, or pass. If they counter, you get their number the same way and answer with accept, counter, or pass.

You never see the reserve. The only seller number you will see is a counter, and only if the seller chooses to send one.

Every move restarts a 24-hour clock, and every negotiation closes Saturday at 5:00 PM ET. If the seller accepts, it is a normal purchase: the dealer fee, then contact release and pickup. If the seller passes or the clock runs out, that is the end of it. No deal, no cost, and you are free to bid on the car if it runs again.

For sellers

A below-reserve close is not a no-sale. You get an email at close telling you the dealer who bid the most now has a private window to close the gap, and your listing shows In negotiation.

Your reserve stays yours. The dealer only knows the high bid was under it.

When an offer arrives, you get an email and see it on your listing. Accept, Counter, or Pass. Accepting and passing both ask you to confirm, so nothing happens by accident.

A counter is the only way a number of yours reaches the dealer. Send one when you want to. Do not when you do not.

Respond within 24 hours of any dealer move. Everything closes Saturday at 5:00 PM ET, so you always know where you stand before the Sunday listing cutoff.

Accept, and your car is sold at that number, with the same flat seller fee as any sale.

No deal? You get an email with a relist for Monday’s lineup, and your car runs again as a Second Chance car showing where bidding reached last time.

Questions

Who gets the window?

The top bidder at close. One dealer, not the field.

Can a car sell below reserve?

Yes, if the seller accepts. The reserve protects the seller during the auction. After it, the seller decides.

What if a deadline is missed?

The window expires, both sides are emailed, and the car goes to the relist path.

Is an accepted number final?

Yes. Accepting is a confirmed step that restates the exact amount, and the sale completes at that number.

Where do I act?

From the links in each email, or from your dashboard: dealers under Open negotiations, sellers on the listing’s negotiation panel.
